The official birthday of the Great Allegheny Passage is June 9, 1978.

This is the date the trail was born when the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy purchased the very first 27-mile parcel of railroad property from the Western Maryland Railway. While its origins trace back to that day in 1978, the 150-mile trail was completed in stages over several decades. 1986: The first 9.5-mile physical section of the trail opened near Ohiopyle State Park. 2001: The first 100 miles of a continuous path were celebrated in Confluence, PA, when the bridge over the Casselman River was opened. At that time, the amalgamation of several trails was officially named the Great Allegheny Passage.…
