Avoid the GAP Through Ohiopyle: Storm Damage Closes a 27-Mile Stretch
Ohiopyle State Park is urging trail users to avoid the storm-damaged GAP, where rockslides and washouts hit the 27-mile stretch through the park.
If you were planning to ride or walk the Great Allegheny Passage through Ohiopyle, hold off. The trail took a beating in this week’s storms.
Ohiopyle State Park is asking people to stay off the GAP after the same heavy rains that flooded Confluence left the trail badly damaged. The park says the 27-mile stretch running through it is the hardest-hit area, with multiple rockslides and washouts along the way.
Crews are already out working, running heavy equipment as they clear debris and make repairs. Between that machinery and the hazards still on the trail, the park is asking trail users to steer clear for now.
The park says it will share updates as crews make repairs and reopen sections of the trail.
For riders based in Confluence, this one hits close. The GAP through Ohiopyle is one of the most popular stretches of the whole trail, and it connects right to our end of things. Combined with the closure near Kennywood that was already pushing back its reopening, it has been a rough summer for the lower Yough.
The trail will come back. It always does. For now, give the crews room to work, and find your miles somewhere else.
