About Larry Walsh

The man who kept Confluence connected, one email at a time.

The Newsletter

For years, Larry Walsh sat down at his keyboard and did something quietly remarkable: he wrote about his town. His email newsletter, News & Views, was a window into the daily life of Confluence, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding Turkeyfoot Valley. In a place where the nearest city felt far away and the local paper had long since thinned out, Larry filled the gap with something deeply personal and genuinely useful.

He covered everything. Community events, local businesses opening or adjusting their hours, school activities at Turkeyfoot Valley Area, the volunteer fire department's fundraisers and fish fries, trail updates along the Great Allegheny Passage, church suppers, recycling reminders, and the comings and goings of a small town that never stopped moving even when the rest of the world wasn't watching. If it mattered to someone in Confluence, it mattered to Larry.

His emails always opened the same way: "Good Morning." Two words that set the tone for everything that followed. And they always closed the same way, too: "That's all for now, Larry." Between those bookends, readers got the news of their community delivered with warmth, humor, and genuine love for the place and the people he wrote about. It was never flashy. It was never cynical. It was Larry, telling you what was happening in your town because he believed it was worth knowing.

The Voice of a Community

Larry didn't just report on Confluence. He championed it. He wrote about PumpkinFest with the kind of enthusiasm that made you wish you'd been there even if you had been. He covered Light Up Night, quilt shows at the Creative Arts Center, spaghetti dinners at the American Legion, and the annual duck race on the Casselman River. He gave airtime to every organization and institution that kept the valley going, from the Confluence Creative Arts Center to Tissue Farm to the Turkeyfoot Lending Library to the volunteer fire department.

When floods devastated communities in North Carolina, Larry helped spread the word about a local donation drive that filled a twenty-six-foot truck with supplies. When a new business opened on Latrobe Avenue, Larry made sure everyone knew about it. When the recycling bins at Outflow had the wrong materials in them, Larry let people know what belonged and what didn't. No story was too small if it served the community.

A journalist by trade, Larry brought professional instincts and a real reporter's eye to his work. His connection to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette gave him a foundation in the craft that showed in every edition. But what set News & Views apart wasn't his journalism credentials. It was the fact that he lived here, knew everyone, and cared about getting the story right because these were his neighbors, his friends, his town.

“Fred Rogers wouldn't have had to look hard for the helpers in Confluence and nearby communities. They're here.”
— Larry Walsh

A Legacy Carried Forward

Larry Walsh built something that outlasted any single edition. He proved that a community newsletter, written by one person who truly cares, can hold a town together in ways that larger institutions often cannot. His voice became the voice of Confluence itself: direct, kind, and always looking for the good in people.

News & Views is now led by managing editor Kris Mamula, with Pope of Pope's Brand Media serving as publisher and executive director. Pope is also a co-owner of Tissue Farm. Local coverage includes the Boro Beat Report by Suzanne Ragan Lentz. The website at newsandviews.info is built to honor Larry's legacy while evolving the newsletter he created into a full local news platform for the digital age. The spirit remains the same: cover what matters, name the people doing the work, and never forget that a small town's stories are just as important as anyone else's.

Good morning, Confluence. Larry showed us how it's done. Now it's our turn to carry it forward.
