The Fourth of July weekend around Confluence had a little of everything, and it started with the heat.
The heat wave that leaned on us all week did not let up in time for the holiday. It was hot. The rivers and trails did not seem to mind. Both were full, with paddlers on the Yough and a steady stream of cyclists and walkers on the Great Allegheny Passage. The businesses in town stayed busy keeping up with all of them. For a few days, our little town was humming.
Then, on the night of the Fourth, the heat finally broke and gave everybody some relief. Good timing.
There were no official fireworks in Confluence this year, but you would not have known it looking up. The skies all around town lit up anyway, courtesy of neighbors who were not about to let the Fourth pass quietly.
It was the country’s 250th birthday, and people came out to mark it the way this town tends to mark things: together, and with a little style.
The official Confluence celebration is still to come on Saturday, July 25. If this weekend was any preview, it is going to be a good one.
