Mark Cuban, founder of Dallas-based Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Co., will appear virtually at a panel discussion at the My Pharmacy, My Choice, My Voice town hall Tuesday June 23 at the Boswell Prescription Center, 210 Ohio Street, Boswell.
Cuban will join Martella’s Pharmacies’ owner Jackie Martella, Somerset County Commissioner Pam Tokar-Ickes and Altoona primary care physician and pharmacist Zane Gates for a discussion about the role of independently owned pharmacies in rural Pennsylvania. Monique Whitney, executive director of Pharmacists United for Truth & Transparency, a Phoenix, Ariz.-based nonprofit advocacy group focusing on the role of pharmacy benefit managers in retail drug pricing and accessibility, will serve as discussion moderator.
The event is free and open to the public.
Johnstown-based Martella’s has been battling Express Scripts, a St. Louis, Missouri-based industry middleman serving health insurers, since the company ruled that Martella was an out-of-network pharmacy as of August 2025.
The decision ended the deep prescription discounts consumers had enjoyed previously, driving them to other drugstores. Among the people affected are Highmark and UPMC Health Plan members, the region’s two biggest health insurers.
Martella closed its Penn-Laurel Pharmacy in Central City at the end of March as it continues to get its in-network provider status restored with Express Scripts.
