GAP Closes Two-Mile Stretch Near Kennywood
A two-mile stretch of the Great Allegheny Passage near Kennywood closes July 9 to August 6 for rock scaling. A $20 shuttle will carry trail users around it.

A two-mile stretch of the Great Allegheny Passage near Kennywood Park will close beginning the evening of Thursday, July 9, and stay closed until August 6.
The closed segment runs between the Whitaker Flyover, around mile marker 136, and the Port Perry Flyover, around mile marker 138. Crews from the Regional Trail Corporation will use the time to do preventative rock scaling on a steep hillside below Kennywood Park and PA-837, a slope prone to rockfall, downed trees and landslides.
There is no detour.
The Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy has lined up a licensed shuttle to carry trail users, bikes included, between the GAP-branded trail access areas in Duquesne and Homestead. The shuttle starts the morning of Friday, July 10 and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., seven days a week, until the work wraps up. The fee is $20 per person.
The shuttle is first-come, first-served, though the driver may adjust the route to keep families traveling together. Shuttle and project details are at gaptrail.org.
Rock scaling is not glamorous work, but it beats meeting a loose boulder at speed. Plan around the closure, take the shuttle if you need it, and the GAP will be whole again by August.
