Brad Smith and a volunteer moved the fire department’s Information Trailer from its winter spot next to the Barlow Building to its seasonal home on the Fayette County side of the bike and pedestrian bridge over the Youghiogheny River. It’s open Fridays through Mondays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The trailer is staffed by adult supervisor Iva Barkley and a crew of local high school students who hand out Confluence brochures, Great Allegheny Passage trail maps, and Ohiopyle State Park information to trail users — primarily cyclists coming through on the GAP. They also encourage those riders to cross the bridge and pedal seven blocks into the central business district. It’s a short trip. Worth making.

Wages are covered by a tourism grant from GO Laurel Highlands in cooperation with Somerset County — $15 an hour for the students, $20 for the adult supervisor. A separate grant covers the trailer rental.

Brad is president and treasurer of the Confluence Tourism Association (CTA), which meets at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Turkeyfoot Valley Historical Society in the H.C. Harned building. Meetings are open to the public. More at www.visitconfluence.info.
