The Confluence Tourism Association renames its annual celebration after a trademark discovery, but the holiday spirit remains unchanged.

For years, the residents of Confluence have marked the arrival of the holiday season with a beloved evening of lights, music and community warmth at the Town Park. This year’s celebration, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 29, will carry all of the familiar traditions forward under a slightly different banner: Light Up Confluence Night. The Confluence Tourism Association voted unanimously to adopt the new name after learning that the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership holds the trademark on the phrase “Light Up Night,” which the event had previously used. The change was straightforward and amicable. The holiday spirit, members said, does not depend on what the evening is called.

Preparations for the event have been a community effort in every sense. In the days leading up to Nov. 29, Tourism Association members and local volunteers gathered at the park to carefully wrap strings of lights around the gazebo, transforming it into the centerpiece of the celebration. Meanwhile, local Boy Scout troops have volunteered to set up fire rings around the park, giving families a place to warm their hands and gather together as the evening unfolds under the late-November sky.

The highlight of the night, as always, will be the arrival of Santa Claus. At 7 p.m. sharp, Santa will roll into town aboard a fire truck, sirens announcing his approach through the borough streets. He will make his way to the illuminated gazebo, greet the crowd and invite the children to join him for the big moment. Together, they will count down from ten, and when the count reaches one, the children will help Santa flip the switch that sends the park’s holiday lights blazing to life. It is a scene that draws cheers and applause year after year, the kind of small-town tradition that holds a community together.

Once the lights are shining, families are invited to head over to the Community Center, where employees from Somerset Trust will be stationed at the windows to serve free hot chocolate and cookies. Each cookie package contains two treats per visitor, and there is plenty for everyone. Parents are encouraged to keep in mind that the hot chocolate is served hot, so younger children may need a few minutes to let their cups cool before taking a sip. It is a small detail, but one that organizers have learned is worth mentioning.

Light Up Confluence Night is free to attend and open to everyone. There are no tickets, no admission fees and no reservations required. Residents of Confluence, the surrounding Turkeyfoot Valley and visitors passing through on the Great Allegheny Passage are all welcome. The event is a testament to the volunteers, business owners and civic groups who give their time and resources to keep these traditions alive. A name may have changed, but the warmth at the center of the evening has not. Confluence will be lit.
