MUCK OUT DAY

Somerset County COAD will hold a Muck Out Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, August 22, for property owners still digging out from the August 11, flooding. Volunteers meet at the United Community Church of God in Ursina, 405 Park St., Confluence, PA 15424, and go out from there to homes that need hands.

Bring work gloves, boots and shovels. The flyer also asks for “a willing heart,” which is the part you cannot pick up at the hardware store.

The effort is organized by the Somerset County Community Organizations Active in Disaster, known as SC-COAD, working with the Somerset County Department of Emergency Services.

WHY IT MATTERS

The August 12 storms put the Youghiogheny up about nine feet in seven hours. Swiftwater crews pulled a family from a Confluence home and campers off a flooded site. Route 281 closed into town. Nobody was hurt, but mud does not shovel itself.

IF YOU NEED HELP, OR CAN GIVE IT

If your property needs work, tell somebody before Saturday, or come to the church lot at 9 a.m. and crews can be routed from there.

If you are going to help, wear the boots you do not mind ruining and plan on being dirty by ten after nine.
