The Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department is marking its 75th anniversary at its annual community picture, Friday July 31 and Saturday Aug. 1 at the Shanksville Community Grove, Cornerstone Road, Friedens.
Activities kick off at 4 p.m. Friday with games and refreshments, followed by a parade on Main Street at 6 p.m. and a free concert at 7 p.m. The music continues Saturday with free concerts starting at 1 p.m. and continuing through 7 p.m.
Food and games, including a bounce house, raffles and dunk tank, will open at 11 a.m. Saturday. Barbeque chicken, sweet Italian sausage and homemade pie will be among the food offerings, along with burgers, hotdogs and chicken tenders.
The two-day picnic will also serve as a fundraiser for a new firetruck for the department, which has served Shanksville, Indian Lake Borough and Stoneycreek Township since 1951. Shanksville serves a 62-square-mile area along with a 15-mile stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Shanksville was the first fire department to reach the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93 in Stoneycreek Township Sept. 11, 2001, in which 37 passengers and seven crew members perished. The site has since become a national memorial to the passengers who brought down the plane, diverting it from what was believed to have been plans to crash the plane into the U.S. Capitol or White House.
