Somerset County Chases $1 Million to Keep the Great Allegheny Passage in Top Shape
Somerset County commissioners voted 3-0 to apply for a $1 million state grant to fund maintenance on the Great Allegheny Passage through the mountains.
The Great Allegheny Passage is the golden thread running through this whole region, and keeping 150 miles of trail smooth, safe and open is not free. So it is good news that Somerset County is going after a serious chunk of money to help.
County commissioners voted 3-0 to apply for a $1 million grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, earmarked for maintenance on the Great Allegheny Passage. For anyone who rides, walks or runs the GAP through Confluence, Rockwood, Garrett and Meyersdale, that is a direct investment in the surface under your tires and the bridges under your feet.
Nobody needs to tell us about it… because the trail is not just recreation on the mountain, it is an economy. The bike shops, the inns, the coffee stops and the outfitters all lean on a passage that stays in good shape year after year. Trail maintenance is not glamorous work, but washouts, rough surface and worn crossings are exactly the kind of thing that turns a great ride into a rough one.
The grant is an application, not a done deal, so the county still has to land it. But the unanimous vote signals that keeping the GAP in top condition is a priority worth chasing state dollars for. We will keep an eye on where it goes.
