Turkeyfoot Second Graders Get a Close Look at the Fire Trucks

Firefighters from Addison and Confluence brought their trucks to Mrs. Walters' second graders at Turkeyfoot for a hands-on fire safety day.

Mrs. Walters’ second graders at Turkeyfoot had a different kind of Friday. Members of the Addison Volunteer Fire Department and the Confluence Volunteer Fire Company brought their trucks to the school, and the kids spent the day on the pavement learning fire safety, or in her words, “a fun day of active learning.”

The photo tell most of the story. Firefighters from both companies opened the compartment doors on the engines and walked the class through what is inside, from hose to gauges. Small groups climbed up to look into a cab. And one firefighter stood in full turnout gear and air mask, the kind of sight that can surprise a seven-year-old if they have never seen it up close. Now they have.

The timing fits. This was Fire Prevention Week, October 4 through 10, and this year’s national theme from the National Fire Protection Association is charging lithium-ion batteries safely, the kind in phones, tablets, and e-bikes.

Both companies are all-volunteer, and a morning with a classroom is time taken out of jobs and families. Thanks to the crews from Addison and Confluence, and to Mrs. Walters for sharing the day with the rest of us.

She called them future firefighters in training. A few looked ready to start Monday.
