There are days when this town reminds you exactly why it sits where it sits — right on the route of something bigger than itself. Memorial Day was one of those days.

Riders from Warrior Expeditions passed through Confluence on Monday, making their way along the Great American Rail Trail — a 3,700-plus mile route stretching from Washington, DC all the way to Seattle, Washington. They stopped in at Confluence Cyclery.

Warrior Expeditions is a nonprofit outdoor therapy program that helps veterans heal from their wartime experiences through long-distance expeditions — bike tours, thru-hikes, and paddling trips that take veterans out of their routines and into the kind of sustained physical challenge that has a way of clearing the mind and restoring a sense of purpose. The rider shared their stories, talked through their gear, and explained the program to the crew at the Cyclery.

Scott, Rachel, and Brandon were all there to welcome them. That is exactly the kind of shop Confluence Cyclery is — the kind of place where a loaded touring bike out front draws people out to talk, and where veterans riding across the country get a proper Confluence welcome.

Thank you for your service. Thank you for stopping in. And safe riding the rest of the way to Seattle — you have got a long and beautiful road ahead.

And thanks to Cyclery for sharing their story and photos with us.
